I read something that explained why this story has such legs that I lost the link to.
Basically it's that it's just such a simple story. That simplicity makes the repbulican efforts at misdirection very obvious, obvious in ways that doesn't happen when they try to misdirect stories about Iraq.
In Iraq stories the silly sound bits like "fight them over there instead of over here" works for people who aren't really paying attention every day. So the stories quickly become uninteresting to viewers/readers.
