KFC underestimated the "power of Oprah"

What idiots. Don't they know that Oprah is the most influential woman in the U.S.?

And free grilled chicken, in this economy? I downloaded the coupon and told my friends and family to do the same.

KFC cancels free chicken deal after Oprah promo

Roger Eaton, president of KFC in the United States said restaurants would no longer accept the free coupons for its new grilled chicken meal after Oprah's chat show promotion caused long lines around the nation.

"The lines of customers wanting to redeem their coupons have been out the door and around the block, so we're unable to redeem customer coupons at this time." Eaton said in a statement issued late Thursday.

To their credit, they will issue rain checks.

Another Texas cop fired.

This guy thought he was special
A veteran lieutenant with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office has been fired for leading a squad of deputies to investigate a $16 theft from his wife’s car at an Humble carwash last year, the department confirmed Wednesday.
...

Murray said Guthrie’s dismissal was the result of the department’s investigation of an incident in July when Guthrie and a number of deputies shut down a carwash after Guthrie’s wife complained that $16 was stolen from her vehicle.

More "thou shalt nots" from religious fanatics

From Findlay, Ohio,

A senior at Heritage Christian School will be suspended Monday for attending Findlay High School's prom because the event involves dancing and rock music.

Escape from the slaughterhouse

A heifer escaped from a slaughterhouse in New York.

The police said the slaughterhouse from which the heifer came was in the area of 158th Street and Beaver Road. There are several slaughterhouses in that area, but none came forward immediately to claim the heifer, Mr. Gentles said.

There were a few things I found interesting, the first being that the NY Times knew enough to call it a heifer and not a cow.

2nd) That there are slaughterhouses in New York (Queens borough)

the heifer trotting with police cars slowly trailing — their lights and sirens noticeably turned off.

3rd) The police had the sense to not use their lights and sirens, and...

Officers eventually lassoed the animal with a rope
,

Lastly) A New York cop knows how to lasso?

Must have been trained by McCloud.

Stimulus

We need to hire more cops
More than $135 million is set aside for Florida (police) agencies as part of a White House initiative to enhance state and local law enforcement.

President Obama announced today that $2 billion from the ongoing Recovery Act is designated for law enforcement.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program, known as JAG, supports: hiring law enforcement officers; multijurisdictional drug and gang task forces; crime prevention and domestic violence programs; and courts, corrections, treatment and justice information-sharing initiatives.

So they'll be able to devote more time to this kind of stuff.
A police officer who initially faced allegations that he had sex with a 17-year-old Tarpon Springs High School student he worked with has resigned today.

Geography Lesson

This is the list of locations for study abroad, at George Mason University, International Commerce and Policy program.

Study abroad opportunities are provided throughout the world, including in Oxford, Mexico, China, South Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Of these locations, 1 is a town, 3 are countries, and one is an area of collective countries.

I guess they want to give themselves some "wiggle room", at the same time impressing potential students with the chance to go to Oxford.

This wouldn't bother me so much, except it is the International Commerce group touting this.

Maybe they should be offering a course in international geography. Or just have some quizzes - find that country. I'll bet whoever wrote this believes Southeast Asia is a country.
