Why do they hate us?
Maynard, on Tammy Bruce's blog, finially explained why they tend to have such a knee-jerk reaction. They don't understand the question.
Such statements rest upon an implicit assumption that hatred is somehow, if not reasonable, at least rational. But that's utter nonsense. What did the Jews do to make the Nazis hate them? What did Abel do to make Cain hate him?
The answer to the question doesn't have to be about us. It's more likely about them. It's about how they think, not about what we've done. And, it's important to understand how our enemies think.

How, exactly, would it have helped the Jews to understand how the Nazis think? I guess it's just the typical leftwing nutcase response when there is conflict to focus on something else entirely, something unsolveable and irrelevant.
I think most of the Jews in, for example, Warsaw, might have not sat around in the ghetto waiting to be rounded up if they had known what the German government was thinking.
Understanding the history and depth of the Sunni/Shia conflict might have helped us avoiding forming an Iraqi government that was a sure thing to cause a civil war
I think understanding the Muslim objections to our support of Isreal might have caused the American voter to ignore the idiots who kept saying "they hate us for our freedom". That might have lead to some effective foriegn policy the last couple of years.
Maybe not though. I just always leaned towards the idea that it's helpful to know what the hell is going on before jumping in the briar patch.
Was it a leftwing nutcase who focused on Iraq when he had conflict with Al Quada?
I was making fun of your "typical rightwing nutcase" line.
Your comment about Israel implies that they hate us because we support the only democracy in the region. But how does the average Saudi find himself affected by American policy on Israel? He doesn't.
They do hate us for our freedom--they hate Israelis for their freedom too.

Whoops, didn't mean to post twice.
Oh, one final thought: Jews in Warsaw, for example, had nowhere to go. Most countries, the US included, were not accepting them in.
